MEMBERSHIP

Membership of IESSA is open to both individual and organisations active in the lighting industry of South Africa. You don't need to be a Lighting Professional to join IESSA - all applications are welcome. Group membership is open to any educational, scientific, technical, professional, institution, public, commercial or municipal entity that is actively involved in the lighting industry.

Individual membership

Benefits of IESSA Membership for Individual Members:


  • Participate in the programme offered by IESSA to be accredited as a Lighting Practitioner.
  • Free attendance at all our non-commercialised Branch Technical presentations by invited speakers/members throughout the year.
  • Recognition of members whose main business is in lighting design, through IESSA's application to ECSA to be recognised as the only voluntary association representing the Illumination engineering industry in South Africa, and endorsing these applications for registration with ECSA as professional illumination engineering practitioners.
  • Networking opportunities with fellow lighting professionals.
  • Discounts on registration fees for the annual IESSA congress and Lighting Courses.
  • Regular notification on lighting courses and all events.
  • Access to international lighting matters through IESSA's membership of the International Commission on Illumination (Commission International de L’Eclairage) (CIE), as well as discounts on CIE publications.
  • Display your name and the wording "Affiliate, Associate, Member or Fellow of the Illumination Engineering Society of South Africa" or abbreviated (StuIESSA, AffIESSA, AssIESSA, MIESSA, FIESSA) on stationary and other appropriate company material.

Individual members are graded into Affiliates, Associates, Members and Fellows.


  1. Affiliate - Grade 12 or N3 with Mathematics and Science and actively involved in the lighting industry.
  2. Associate - Grade 12 or N3 with Mathematics and Science AND have at least 5 years relevant experience in the lighting industry.
     OR Minimum 3 years approved profession related tertiary education AND have at least 2 years relevant experience in the lighting industry.
  3. Member - Grade 12 or N3 with Mathematics and Science AND have at least 10 years of relevant experience in the lighting industry.
    OR Minimum 3 years approved profession related tertiary education AND have at least 5 years of relevant experience in the lighting industry.
    OR Diploma in Illumination Engineering AND have at least 5 years of relevant experience in the lighting industry.
    OR Is a specialist, as determined by Council, in a lighting related field.
  4. Fellows -  Will be elected by the IESSA

Group Membership

  • Exhibition rights at the annual IESSA congress.
  • Free links to your organisation's web page from the IESSA Website.
  • Comprehensive technical advice on all lighting related issues.
  • Regular notification on lighting courses and all events.
  • First call on sponsorship opportunities for IESSA events and activities.
  • Access to international lighting matters through IESSA's membership of the International Commission on Illumination (Commission International de L"Eclairage) (CIE), as well as discounts on CIE publications.
  • Display of the IESSA logo and the wording "Group Member" of the Illumination Engineering Society of South Africa on stationary and other appropriate company material.

Membership Fees

  • New Members pay a once off entrance fee.
  • The entrance fee and the first year's annual subscription fee shall become due upon receipt of the written notice, advising the applicant of the success of his application for membership. Payment of both these amounts must be made within 3 (three) months from the date of this invoice.
  • Should payment not be received within this period the application shall be deemed to have lapsed.
  • Membership will not become effective until such time that both the entrance fee and the first year's annual subscription fee has been paid in full.
  • Should an existing member be transferred to a higher grade of membership, the annual subscription fee for grade transferred to will be calculated on a quarterly basis and shall be payable in advance for this period.
  • A Student does not pay an entrance fee.
  • Accredited Lighting Designer ID card is only available to a membership grade of “Member” and “Fellow”.

Please print the respective application form, complete all the fields and forward it to the closest IESSA branch Chairpersons to propose and second your application. Please include supporting documents regarding qualifications, experience and training to substantiate your application.
